Insects

Water Striders (also called Jesus Bugs, Skaters, Water Skaters, Pond Skaters, Wherrymen) are true aquatic insects. They are one of few insects that are not preyed upon to a large extent by trout. It is thought that they smell and taste bad and perhaps exude a chemical repellant. It is also possible that they are very quick and wary and avoid predation in this manner. They are predatory themselves. Their bouyancy results from microscopic hairs that trap air bubbles and line their long legs. It is not recommended that you try a Water Strider pattern.
