Dan - Sorry for the slow response - was in Colorado fishing and there aren't too many people registered on the site yet. Are you sure they were trout? The river at the canoe landing is the North Branch Root River and it's not a designated trout stream. Although trout do enter it upstream from Mill Creeck, which is trout water, so it is possible they were. As for hoppers, there are dozens of good patterns online if you Google "tying hoppers." Traditionally, they've been tied with a deer hair heads and wings that float well and have bodies made of poly dubbing material or yarn. They don't need to be fancy. The new generation hoppers are mostly tied with colored foam materials. They're are some wild and creative variations. If you still need hoppers and don't want to tie them, run over to Cabela's fly shop in Owatonna, or call Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop in Lake Elmo (East of St. Paul) or Bentley's Fly Shop in Bloomington. Either will mail them to you overnight. I guess Cabela's catalog will too. Hope this helps. Good luck fishing!

So my dad, mom, and myself headed out for some great trout fishing on whitewater, trout run, and the root river this Saturday! It was beautiful and we enjoyed ourselves despite only catching one small brown on a nymph. This morning the 30th we headed back to the root river right after chatfield at the canoe entrance. The trout were jumping and there seemed to be a nice Trico hatch. Although we could not get them to bite!!!! Any suggestions? Also gander mountain and several local bait shops are out of hoppers so I was wondering if there was an easy recipe to tie my own?
